Hancock County Schools Ask Residents To Support Levy

On Nov. 2, residents in Hancock County will be asked to vote on a $37 million bond levy.

If approved, the levy would allow for the construction of a new elementary school to replace three existing schools located in Weirton. It would also provide funds to upgrade and modernize the remaining six schools and the John D. Rockefeller IV Career Center.

This levy would include an additional $19 million awarded by the School Building Authority, making this a 34/66 percent match.

Some residents said they wish the total package didn't include so many changes. William Fordyce said he feels Oak Glen and Weir High schools need new stadiums.

"They're traveling too far to get to the stadiums, I know that," said Fordyce.

Other residents, like William Harrison, said the stadiums are the last thing the school should be worried about.

"Upgrades, yes. Maybe consolidating schools. I'm not so sure about the stadiums," said Harrison.

But, Katrina Crisci said she was all for it. "It's a whole package, right? You can't get one without the other so in answer to your question, I say get it all," said Crisci.

In total, the passage of the bond levy would provide $56 million funding for the school system.
