WHEELING, W.Va.-- Two people were sent to jail last weekend after heroin was found in their car, police said.

The Mountaineer Highway Interdiction Team made a big bust on Wheeling Island Sunday evening.

At a routine traffic stop, West Virginia State Police smelled burnt marijuana. Police said a K-9 unit would go on to search the car and discover 15 grams of marijuana in one suspect's purse and a large amount of heroin, 15 grams, or $1,400 worth, in a bag at the feet of the car's passenger.

Shawn Lemont Mcclain, the passenger, told police he brought the drugs from Cleveland to Wheeling. He is charged with possession of heroin and the intent to deliver, which is a felony.

Police say the driver of the car, Chaunita Williams, claimed the marijuana. Her charge will be a misdemeanor. Williams’ 5-year-old daughter was riding in the back seat of the car when the stop was made.

"You never like to see that, you don't like to see children present anytime drug trafficking is going on, and that may lead to additional charges in this case," said William Ihlenfeld, U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of West Virginia.

Both McClain and Williams were arraigned from the northern regional jail Monday morning via video conference with Magistrate Joe Roxby.

"Unfortunately, in this area we see a lot of drugs that come in from Cleveland, Columbus, Pittsburgh, Baltimore and other bigger cities, and so it's important for us to stay on top of that and make sure that if drugs come in from bigger cities that we're able to stop them before it hits the street," said Ihlenfeld.

Roxby set McClain's bond at $20,000 and Williams’ $2,000.

In addition to the child, a third person only identified as "pee" from Atlanta, Ga., was in the car at the time, and it's unclear why that person was there, or whether he or she will face charges.
