Hilltop Elementary School

By NEWS9

Hilltop Elementary School in Marshall County, W.Va., has an extensive recycling program. According to the school, as of March 2012, programs included:

-  A plastic bottle recycling program called the "Dream Machine Recycle Rally" through Pepsi Co. and Greenopolis. Details about the nationwide program can be found at http://www.dreammachinerecyclerally.com/. Hilltop Elementary is currently in the top 50 schools in the country for the most bottles collected. It averages more than 1,500 plastic bottles per week.

- The school collects all types of paper and cardboard as a PTO fundraiser.  School affiliates take the material to Valley Converting Inc. in Toronto, Ohio, on a monthly and sometimes weekly basis. The school has recycled more than 16 tons of paper and cardboard since August.

- Since it is a "green" school, Hilltop Elementary encourages all types of recycling. The school asks that families take plastic that is not a part of the "Dream Machine Recycle Rally" program to a local recyclable plastic dropoff point. If they cannot or choose not to, the school accepts it and delivers it.

- The school recycles drink pouches and printer ink cartridges through Terracycle.
