BELMONT COUNTY, Ohio —

Traffic is moving again in Belmont County after a tractor trailer crashed into a concrete wall on Interstate 70 Saturday.

According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the crash happened in the westbound lanes of I-70 near milepost 216.

The driver of the tractor-trailer approached the lane shift area, hit the attenuator and struck the concrete median wall.

The fuel tank came off and caught fire on the roadway; however, the truck did not catch fire, troopers said.

Cars were backed up for almost seven hours after the crash was reported at 5:42 a.m.

The driver was transported to the Ohio Valley Medical Center with serious injuries, dispatchers said.

A Belmont County Sheriff's deputy pulled the driver out of the damaged truck, dispatchers said.

One lane was open while crews worked to remove the truck from the highway.

"We saw the construction, and there was a sign way back there was said there was an accident," said Claire Knappenberger, a driver on the highway. "So I said, 'Maybe we should get off and get on 40,' but he was already past there. So here we are.”

Cranes worked to pull the truck away from the wall, and both lanes opened to traffic at 1 p.m., troopers said.

The Environmental Protection Agency was contacted about the diesel fuel spill.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
