Ice Jams In Belmont County

Crews Try To Prevent Flooding

Folks who live along the creeks and streams of Belmont County are breathing a huge sigh of relief today after ice jams let loose without major flash flooding. Early this morning an ice jam let loose near the County Road 24 Bridge. Then at around four o'clock this morning another trouble spot between Glencoe and Neffs--this flooding forced State Route 149 near the Submarine Bridge to close. With homes lining the side of the creeks...residents were preparing for the worst and praying for the best. Their prayers were answered when the two ice jams cleared out without any major problems. Belmont County E.M.A. crews had hoped the same thing would happen at Captina Creek which runs along Route 149 - instead a major ice jam caused some flooding on a nearby golf course. County Road 56 was underwater for a short time this morning and Belmont County E.M.A. Director Dick Quinlin says residents in this area are no strangers to flooding. Quinlin says the ice that's been left along the creek banks could be a sign of more high waters to come before the end of the season, he says the nex few days could be crucial so residents need to be aware of water levels.
