PITTSBURGH, Pa. --
One month after he was injured in a crash, 15-year-old Justin Cummings is still encountering the fight of his life, but he said it's a fight he isn't going to lose.
The Indian Creek sophomore spoke to NEWS9 at UPMC Mercy Hospital in Pittsburgh, where he continues to recover.
"I've been feeling really good -- a lot stronger. Exercising and therapy and stuff like that is really good," Cummings said.
Cummings, who previously played basketball and football for Indian Creek, is paralyzed form the chest down and his battle has captured the attention of the entire Ohio Valley.
While some would call this a life-changing experience, Cummings said, "I know I'm going to get through it and get back on my feet."
His mother, Lisa, said Justin "is a very hard worker. He doesn't like to rail and he's very athletic and I think he takes this on as a challenge."
Justin's friends and teammates have shown a lot of love in return, like Frankie Camerick, who wears Justin's No. 35 jersey on the court.
"I'd like to say thanks for everything. I'm grateful and I love everybody that's done everything. … I need a miracle too, and I'm going to pray every day and I would like everybody else to pray every day. Pray for that miracle," Justin said.
He is expected to come home on March 13.
For people who want to show support for him tonight, the Hearts And Prayers event starts at 6 p.m. at the Mingo Junction Knights of Columbus hall. People must be 21 or older to attend and the event goes until midnight. There will be a disc jockey and items auctioned off including Steelers and Browns tickets.
On Sunday, the Jefferson County JVS will have a benefit luncheon for Justin from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
