Indian Creek students settle in to new state-of-the-art middle school

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ohio —

With two days at their new school under their belts, Indian Creek Middle School students and administrators said the new facility is a major upgrade for them.

Officials were still making final adjustments for students and staff to settle in on Friday, but they said they're excited about the possibility with the new school.

The school is a major upgrade from the previous four-story building, which was built in the 1920s. Among other features, it includes a security system and computer labs.

"This facility is all handicap-accessible, all one level. It has state-of-the-art technology, climate control, heating and ventilation systems, so it's climate controlled with heat and air conditioning," Superintendent John Rocchi said.

Thursday night, a couple of hundred community members came to a ribbon-cutting ceremony, along with community officials, Sen. Lou Gentile and State Rep. Jack Cera.

After a failed levy in November to build a new high school, Rocchi said board members are preparing for the next ballot. He said community members who walk through the new middle school are sure to be impressed.

"They want to see the facilities of this school district continue to be improved, not only our new high school but we also need some renovations to our other buildings," Rocchi said.

As for the old building, he said it will be auctioned off Jan. 26 and that money will be used to help run the district's facilities.

If the district doesn't get a bid on the old building, Rocchi said there's money in the budget to demolish the structure.
