JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ohio —

A man hospitalized after getting hit by a car Christmas night was indicted by the Jefferson County grand jury Thursday.

James Coil, 32, faces misdemeanor charges after a Wells Township officer approached him and another man on a Brilliant roadway Dec. 25. Coil, along with Officer J. J. Kamerer are recovering from serious injuries following the accident.

"As it has been reported, there's a co-defendant in this case, Barry Starcher," said Dillonvale Prosecutor Jeff Bruzzese. "Charges were filed against him in January following an incident on Christmas evening."

After hearing testimony from officers and witnesses in the case, Bruzzese said the grand jury found enough evidence to indict Coil, even while he recovers from injuries.

"The investigation's been ongoing since Christmas evening. The grand jury heard from some of the officers that investigated, some of the officers that took statements, including officers who took statements from Starcher," said Bruzzese.

Even through Coil is recovering physically, the prosecutor says the grand jury found enough evidence to file three charges against Coil, including resisting arrest and obstructing official business.

Bruzzese said Coil will not be arraigned until he fully recovers.

In the meantime, the attorneys are preparing for the Starcher's hearing next month, said Bruzzese.
