Is Your Water Safe?

Lead in your water? Water treatment managers we spoke with tell their customers the water they get from the faucet everyday is virtually lead-free.

Steubenville is one example of a town where a water clarity problem was corrected two years ago and now the water's lead level rates very low, mainly through luck.

Local water suppliers we talked with say the water they treat doesn't have lead in it, but it will pick up lead in the system.

Katie Fiore is one mom who got an unpleasant surprise. The Good Housekeeping Institute found lead in her water, higher than the Federal E-P-A's action level.

Katie lives in an area where neighbors are told the water is pure We are told the problem is not in the water, but in her home.

The dangers of lead are well-known. Lead poisoning can lead to developmental problems or chronic illness in young children, and has proven fatal for some babies. If you live in an older house, lead is the sneakiest kind of pollutant, hiding in paint, walls, ceilings and even plumbing.

To sniff out the problem in your home, you can buy a home test kit from places like Macs Lab. You sample the water, mail it to the company and they get you results within two days.

If you can't find the kit anywhere, try H-2-O Pros in Weirton. They produce and offer water so pure it won't conduct electricity, and they'll analyze the tap water from your house for all sorts or chemicals. But for lead, even they have to send it away.

Experts tell me to be safe at home, check your house for lead pipes or a lead water service line. If you have them, and replacing the system is cost-prohibitive, a filter might be right for you.

Installing a home filter for lead can be pricey; they usually run between $100 and $150.
