Jefferson Co. building fire ruled arson

EMPIRE, Ohio —

A fire at a vacant building in Jefferson County has been ruled arson.

The fire was reported around 6 p.m. Thursday at an old garage in Empire, just off an alley along Main Street.

Fire officials were concerned the flames would ignite nearby apartments they were able to prevent the fire from spreading. It took crews several hours to douse the blaze.

No injuries were reported.

Empire Volunteer Fire Department Assistant Chief Kevin Gray said Thursday evening the structure is unstable and officials asked residents to stay clear of the building.
