Jefferson Co. commissioners investigating claims critical of animal shelter

By Kelly Camarote and  NEWS9

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ohio —

Jefferson County commissioners are investigating claims that dogs are being killed inhumanely at the county's animal shelter.

William Bell, who has been dog warden for 12 years, disputed those claims and showed NEWS9 paperwork that records all dogs taken in by the shelter this year.

Bell said 13 percent of the dogs taken in were euthanized, which he said is a low number. In addition, he said the shelter follows the rules when a dog is euthanized.

There have been Facebook posts generating many responses. One post accuses Bell of inhumanely killing dogs. Jefferson County Commissioner Dave Maple said the County Commission office has also received phone calls and he's been copied on one email that shares concerns about the shelter.

Maple said the county is investigating the claims, but currently the shelter follows the euthanasia guidelines handed down by the Humane Society of the United States.

The initial Facebook post says Bell "kills dogs constantly that he never gives a chance to." The post further says, "This facility has the capacity to hold 48 dogs and he will not have more than 6 to 9 at one time or it's a mass murder day."

But, according to records, the shelter has taken in 94 dogs so far this year and euthanized 14 of them. Bell said some were put down because of sickness, others because of aggressiveness.

The shelter also documents dogs that were rescued, recovered by their owners, or sold to new "forever homes."

The numbers also don't account for dogs that are coming in or going out today. The shelter is currently scheduled to take in 10 puppies, then four hours later a rescue group is scheduled to pick up all 10 of them. A family also walked in to adopt a dog just as a NEWS9 crew was leaving the shelter.
