STEUBENVILLE, Ohio —

Officials in Jefferson County are investigating a possible case of abuse at a local school for disabled.

The investigation is taking place at the School of Bright Promise on John Scott Highway in Steubenville.

Superintendent Mike Mehalik told NEWS9 the focus of the investigation is on a professional staff member who has been placed on paid administrative leave since Wednesday.

Mehalik said the staff member will stay on administrative leave until the police investigation is complete.

As of Friday, not many details about the abuse allegation are being released, aside from the fact that it was made straight to police and not the school. Mehalik said that is acceptable protocol.

He said this is the first time the employee has been accused of such a crime.

"Obviously, we take any abuse or neglect investigation very seriously. We are working closely with our local police department and Childrens Services to help them any way we can throughout this investigation," he said.

He said anytime there is an investigation like this, there is a major concern. He said his first concern is for the safety and well-being of all children and adults they serve.
