Jefferson Commissioners Pass Budget; Approve Countywide Cuts

Jefferson County commissioners passed a 2010 budget that will cut funds an average of 17 percent for all departments.

Commissioner Tom Gentile said the $12.8 million budget was approved after cooperation from all department heads and he said there is no room to budge.

"If this was a household, there would be no cable TV, the heat would be turned down to 65. That's the point we're at with the budgets throughout the county," Gentile said.

During the meeting, commissioners said they intend on keeping the budget balanced.

The county auditor said the sheriff's office will receive $1.2 million from the general fund. With jail levy money and other funds added, the sheriff's office will receive more than $3.7 million, which is still a 16 percent cut from last year.

The cut percentage for commissioners is 17 percent and they will get a little more than $300,000.

"When you look at our clerk and our three salaries, the only thing we have left is $1,000 for office supplies," Gentile said.

The coroner's office will take a 27 percent cut, the Buildings and Grounds Department will take a 15 percent cut, and miscellaneous expenses were cut by 75 percent.

"We really looked on a department-by-department basis. We didn't just go across the board, but we had our goals within a range where we know it needed to be," Gentile said.

Commissioners said their work is not over and, in order to keep those budgets on track, they will meet with each department on a quarterly basis.

The county has not used any emergency funds to keep the budget balanced, and commissioners said they hope to keep it that way again this year. However, they said there is a chance those funds will be needed eventually.
