John Marshall Students Step Up Campaign Against Underage Drinking

Days after a group of John Marshall High School students was suspended after police said the kids were caught drinking at the school's football game last week, students are pushing for more underage drinking prevention.

The student council president and the group's adviser said the allegations from Friday have inspired the start of a Students Against Drunk Driving chapter at the high school.

"With alcohol or drugs, anything … can happen," said Josh Dobbs, student council president. "When you do that, it's because you're bored and you want to have fun." But, he said doing drugs or drinking keeps kids from being safe.

In February 2008, students at John Marshall lost classmate Chaz Lightner after a night of drinking. That, combined with the students who are accused of drinking at the football game, prompted the student council to step up its alcohol prevention efforts.

"When you let the kids out and make up their own sense of fun, that's when the damage or the danger starts. We've lost children in the past and we don't want to lose any more kids," said Sally Gaughenbaugh, student council adviser.

Dobbs said the student council started tailgating parties for students before games, an event that kicked off last week, and hopes more students participate in.

He said they hope to be an example to other students and other schools. He said he hopes it's not just students who attend the tailgating parties, but he would also like to see more involvement and support from community sponsors to help make the parties successfully.
