CADIZ, Ohio —

A judge handed down a sentence for former Harrison County juvenile deputy clerk Cathy Rose Wednesday afternoon.

Rose is accused of theft in office and tampering with records.

The defense brought out witness after witness at the hearing. All of them requested Rose not be sentenced to prison because she is the primary caretaker of her daughter Cassie, 32, diagnosed with cystic fibrosis.

But a representative of the victims in this case was not so kind. He said Rose never owned up to what she did. Instead, she blamed it on her co-workers.

Special prosecutor Chris Berhalter requested Rose be put behind bars for at least two years.

"Despite all of the evidence of guilt, the defendant showed no remorse," Berhalter said.

The investigation revealed that court records were destroyed in an elaborate theft scheme, and Berhalter said it's likely the amount was greater than $4,700.

“The only person that knows the true amount is the defendant,” Berhalter said.

Then, for the first time, Rose expressed her remorse.

"I'm sorry it caused grief and hardship to my co-workers, and I'm sorry it caused grief and hardship to my family," Rose said.

It seemed the judge showed leniency, sentencing rose to: a 3-day sentence in the Harrison County Jail, 27 days of electronic house arrest, two years probation and restitution fees totaling nearly $8,000.

Along with community control sanctions, Rose is now forever disqualified from holding public office.

She will report to the Harrison County Jail Thursday morning to begin her 3-day sentence.
