Jury must weigh death sentence for Craigslist killer

Psychologist testifies for Richard Beasley's life

By The Associated Press

AKRON, Ohio —

Jurors who convicted a self-styled Ohio preacher for killing three men lured with Craigslist job offers returned Wednesday to consider his sentence.

The same jury in Akron that convicted 53-year-old Richard Beasley must decide whether to recommend the death penalty or life in prison.

Psychologist John Fabian testified to spare the life of the triple killer, saying Beasley suffers from personality disorders.

Fabian said Beasley suffers from depression, alcohol abuse, low self-esteem and a feeling of isolation, all possible results of a troubled, abusive childhood. Beasley's mother testified earlier about his difficult childhood.

Beasley was convicted last week of killing three men and wounding a fourth, all lured with offers of farmhand jobs in southeast Ohio. The survivor was wounded, fled into the woods and tipped off police.

Beasley testified that the survivor pulled a gun on him in retaliation for being a police informant.

Beasley's co-defendant, then 16 years old, was too young to face the death penalty. Brogan Rafferty was sentenced to life without chance of parole on his conviction last year.
