WEIRTON, W.Va. —

Weirton police are seeking several people who passed counterfeit cash and are looking for the people making the fake money to prevent any more bills from hitting the streets.

Confiscated paper that appears to be $50 bills is part of the investigation into what police are calling a possible counterfeit cash ring. The front and back of one the confiscated bills don't even match up, but the fake money is showing up in multiple places in both Brooke and Hancock counties.

"We've already had arrests that have been made. But it's because of the large quantity of bills that we believe have already gone out (that) the investigation is still ongoing," said Weirton police Detective Rob Alexander.

The latest counterfeit bills showed up at the Weirton Walmart on Saturday. Police are trying to identify a man caught on surveillance video passing three counterfeit $50 bills just after 5 p.m. The man was wearing a white shirt and black hat.

Police said this was not the first incident at that Walmart. In June, investigators dealt with two similar incidents in the same night. From surveillance video, they are also trying to identify a man in a red shirt, as well as a man and woman. Police said both passed counterfeit $100 bills.

"These videos are a part of that ongoing investigation. Those parties passing those bills, we need to talk to in reference to this larger investigation we're doing," Alexander said.
