Layoffs Strike Harrison County Organization

By Kate Davison

HARRISON COUNTY, Ohio —

A local business in Harrison County is facing its second round of cuts in just over two years. Officials with the county’s Jobs and Family Services were forced to eliminate an additional two positions after state and federal funding cuts.

Director Scott Blackburn said he’s all too familiar with being forced to cut back.

“Forty percent of our staff had to be laid off two years ago,” said Blackburn.

He said customer service is taking a hit because of the cuts, saying it’s almost impossible to maintain the same level of service. Blackburn said staff members are now pulling double duty.

“It makes more work for the ones that are still here,” said Blackburn.

Harrison County commissioner Bill Host said the cuts had to be approved out of necessity. Blackburn said he is hopeful that the jobs can be brought back at some point.

“I’m hopeful, but I was hopeful with the first 13 that were laid off,” said Blackburn.
