Local Athletes Compete With Heat

High school football players in West Virginia are not only competing for positions, but they're battling the intense heat.

Practice is underway this week, and the severe weather can be not only a distraction, but can also be dangerous.

Dave Reiter, Brooke High School football coach, said athletes are required to bring a water jug with them so they can drink at any time.

Before students become exhausted, they are encouraged to replenish fluids. Student trainers also walk around the field with water bottles, and water troughs are available so athletes can soak their heads or get a drink.

"If they feel faint, light-headed or whatever, we tell them to step back... relax a bit," Reiter said.

Mike Wagoner, a trainer for Brooke High for nine years, suggests when the team should take a break and also monitors signs of dehydration. He said red flags include profuse sweating, vomiting and muscle cramps.

Wagoner said he also keeps a closer eye on athletes who didn't stay as conditioned over the winter, those who are overweight, and those with fair-skin.

Reiter said it's important for all students -- including other types of athletes and band members -- to stay hydrated between practices by drinking plenty of water and sports drinks.
