WHEELING, W.Va —
In response to those affected in West Virginia by Hurricane Sandy and an October storm, the Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston will make a special offertory collection at all Masses on Nov. 11 and 12.
All proceeds from the collection will be forwarded to Catholic Charities West Virginia. In a news release, the diocese said the organization is one of the largest social service providers in the state and it will make charitable distributions through its extensive network of agencies, staff and volunteers.
Funds will only be used to provide long-term disaster recovery services to individuals or families in West Virginia."I feel at this time that it's so important for us to help people across West Virginia who are suffering and carrying the burden left behind by Hurricane Sandy," Bishop Michael J. Bransfield said. "As a faith community, it is time to reach out to Catholics across the diocese so that we can reach those who need help the most, particularly those affected by snow, wind and water damage."
Diocese officials said in the news release said CCWVa is well known for its long-term recovery efforts after natural disasters of this kind across West Virginia.
"Catholic Charities agencies work together with governmental and other non-profit organizations to extend support to individuals and families who need utility assistance, food, clothing and other help to ensure those affected are living in safe, secure and sanitary homes," the release stated.
