Local group selling ribbons for shooting victims

By Jeff Bowers

A local woman says she is organizing an effort to make and sell green ribbons in order to raise money for the victims of the recent school shooting in Connecticut and their families.

Chelesa Lucas said she was inspired to do something to help after learning of what happened.

She said it was important that the families of the victims know that they have support from people everywhere.

Thursday evening, Lucas and a group of other volunteers met at a Weirton church to assemble the ribbons.

Each ribbon will be sold for $1 with all the money going to the United Way in Connecticut. Lucas said that other donations are also being accepted.

“I know it’s going to take years for closure and for them to be ok,,” she said. “But, if they know that we’re behind them, maybe it will – somewhat – help.”

Lucas said the group has a goal of raising $500. Several ribbons were already sold at a candlelight service in Weirton Wednesday. The group plans to sell the ribbons and collect money through February.
