Local Landowners Receiving Checks For Selling Property For Oil And Gas Drilling

CARROLL COUNTY, Ohio —

More than $40 million is getting pumped into a local county's economy in the form of bonus checks given to landowners who have sold their gas and oil rights.

In Carroll County, County Commissioner Tom Wheaton said Rex Energy started buying up the leases in June, and several landowners have already received their checks.

Wheaton said the commission is seeing a rise in sales taxes and bed taxes collected in their county because of gas and oil drilling, but it is not as high as they expected.

Compared to last year, Wheaton said the sales tax is up only $1,000.

Even though tax revenues are not as high as they would like, Wheaton added the industry is creating jobs in the county.
