Local Man On Death Row; Victim's Daughter Speaks

On the night of May 8, 1989, Charles Sponhaltz left his home on Deep Run Road in Belmont County and drove to return chairs for his son's birthday party. He never came home.

He was murdered by Donald "Duke" Palmer. In a fit of road rage, Palmer fatally shot and robbed Sponhaltz and another man.

Sponhaltz's daughter, Tiffany Sponhaltz-Pugh, just 5 years old at the time, recalled how her mother told her.

"They sat me down in the middle of the living room and they explained to me that my father was never coming home," said Sponhaltz-Pugh.

Palmer was convicted and put on death row. He was sent to the Ohio State Penitentiary in Youngstown where he still remains.

After exhausting appeals, his execution date could come next year.

"It just blows me away that it's 21 years later and we're almost to the point where we see justice," said Sponhaltz-Pugh.

It's a punishment that's justified, she said.

"He didn't come out and say, 'Shoot me and rob me. That'll work for me today.' No he didn't. So, it's an eye for an eye," said Sponhaltz-Pugh.

Sponhaltz-Pugh now owns her father's home on Deep Run Road. She lives there with her family.

"The biggest thing for me is my children will never get to meet my father," said Sponhaltz-Pugh.
