Local National Guardswomen Honored For Aiding Navy Helicopter Crash Victims

Family and friends will gather Wednesday to honor two Army National Guard members who helped rescue Navy crews after a helicopter crash.

According to officials, the Navy helicopter flew into the side of a West Virginia mountain back in February. All 17 people on board the chopper survived.

Because of the snowy conditions, rescue crews spent the night with the Navy victims until other rescue crews could reach them the next morning.

Nicole Hopkins and Lauri Wentworth, both of Adena, Ohio, were two of the rescuers deployed on the rescue mission. Both said they will be deployed to Afghanistan in a couple of months.

Hopkins told NEWS9 other members of her unit are from Wheeling, East Liverpool and St. Clairsville. The event Wednesday was a farewell ceremony for local troops heading overseas.
