STEUBENVILLE, Ohio —

One of the founding fathers of WTOV-TV passed away Monday at 104 years old.

Louis Berkman and his brother, Jack, founded the station, then known as WSTV-TV, in 1953.

The Louis Berkman Co., now in its 81st year, started as a scrap iron and steel company in the 1920s.

He was also instrumental in raising money for St. John Medical Center, which is now Trinity West, and St. John Arena.

Berkman is probably known best in the Ohio Valley for the Louis and Sandra Berkman Amphitheater at the Old Fort Steuben, which was dedicated in 2006.

The theater at Steubenville Catholic Central High School, which opened last November, also bears his name.

Berkman's foundation also established a professorship at Harvard University and scholarships at Cornell University, Franciscan University and Bethany College.

Funeral and burial services are private.
