Local Reaction To State Of The Union Address

In Monday night's State of the Union Address President Geoge W. Bush touched on several issues. One of his biggest concerns was the economy. He asked for quick approval of his plan to give about 100 million Americans a tax rebate check.

"At kitchen tables across our country there is concern about our economic future... In the long run Americans can be confident about our economic growth, but in the short run we can all see that growth is slowing," said the president.

But, Bush's plan to pump $150 billion into the economy drew up some mixed emotions from lawmakers and people in the valley.

Some people in the valley told NEWS9 it's a great idea, but others said it's a risk because people will probably save the money instead of putting it back into the economy.

Craig Smith of Steubenville said, "I don't know if it will work, but I know we need more jobs in the country."

Ohio Rep. Zack Space said he is in partial agreement with the President. "Something needs to be done to give this economy a shot in the arm, but what I really want to hear is the outline or a blue print or the plan for the future of a long-term economic plan," said Space.

Rep. Michael Turner had other views. Turner believes the pump into the economy will provide relief directly to families. "As they see escalating costs, this is going to be an opportunity to respond to their household budgets and move this economy forward," said Turner.

Monday night, unlike past years, Bush made few, if any, other large-scale proposals about the troop surge in Iraq. None on illegal immigration or social security.
