Local Sheriff Wants To Take Charge Of 911 Center

BELMONT COUNTY, Ohio —

Belmont County Sheriff Fred Thompson is asking the county commissioners if he can take over the 911 center and its daily operations.

Thompson said that he has sent emails to commissioners and hopes to meet with them soon to talk about the proposal.

Along with his proposal of becoming the man in charge of the 911 operations center, Thompson wants to bring back the four sheriff’s office dispatchers he had to lay off in 2009 to cut costs. He feels it will help the communications center run more efficiently.

Thompson said it’s a waiting game until he and commissioners can sit down and talk about his plan.

According to Thompson, his intentions are all legal and part of the Ohio revised code.

The code states, "in any county with a population of less than 750,000, the county sheriff shall operate the countywide public safety communications system.”

In order to do that, Thompson must first give notice to county commissioners. Thompson said he does not want to reinvent the wheel, but just improve some things.

"They cannot run criminal history checks over the leads computer, they cannot enter warrants and take warrants out of the leads computer," Thompson said.

While he waits to hear a response, Thompson said that residents or employees should have no reason to worry.

"When people call in they are still going to get to talk to a dispatcher, whether it is fire, EMS, or law enforcement, they are still going to be talking to people," Thompson explained.

While it could take some time, Thompson is hopeful of a bright outcome.

Thompson is hoping to hear from commissioners within the next two weeks to discuss when his office and theirs can meet.
