1100 Block demo work at standstill

By Philip Stahl

WHEELING, W.Va.—

Demolition work in the 1100 block of downtown Wheeling has been halted after part of the former Feet First building on Market Street collapsed a wall into Howard's Diamond Center, a building next door that is not part of the demolition project.

"There was a common wall issue, and when crews were starting to take the Feet First Building down, part of the wall caved into Howard's Diamond Center," said city manager Robert Herron.

Herron said that the demolition crew, Dore & Associates and the city have been working out the issue.

"We hope to have a resolution on moving forward with taking our building down within a few weeks.

Snow now blankets the 1100 block, where numerous buildings stood for years. For the first time in recent memory, you can stand on Main Street and watch traffic move by on Market Street.

"Once we get the Feet First Building down, we have some money that we can use to spruce up the area and market it for future development, but city council has to sit down and discuss that first," said Herron.

When asked if Howard's Diamond Center could be demolished along with the Feet First building, giving the option that the business moved to the Highlands and the building is empty, Herron said it's possible, but, that would have to be approved by city council.

"Right now we just need to finish out our work with Dore & Associates and get the Feet First building down," said Herron.

The holdup will not cost taxpayers additional money, since a contract with the demo company was agreed to several months ago.
