Address changes causing problems

BROOKE COUNTY, W.Va. —

It's been in the works for years, and some residents in Brooke County will finally be seeing changes to their address system.

The address changes have been ongoing across the state, and Brooke County is one of the last to make those changes.

The focus of the new system is outside of corporate limits not within the cities.

The plan is to change the current rural roads and addresses to the more common city-style addresses such as 123 Main Street. Officials said this change will make it easier for first responders to find emergencies.

However, the rural changes leaked into the city of Wellsburg affecting about 80 residents. The problem: Wellsburg has its own addressing ordinance and city council was not notified of the changes.

This left many residents upset and shocked, especially when they first learned they did not have the option to appeal the changes.

"It's just a historic house. We found out there was a lot of history with the house. The house has been 1200 Pleasant Avenue for over 100 years and we want to keep it that way. If they are going to change someone's address, you should be able to appeal it. It's just due process in every place in the county. All I got was a letter saying your address is being changed," explained Michael Allman.

After a meeting was held with Wellsburg residents on Wednesday, Allman said they will now have an option to keep their current address.

If you will be getting a new address, all documents such as your driver's license, bills and any other important documents, must be changed. Sheriff Richard Ferguson released a statement saying residents have six months to make those changes.
