Airport project nears completion

By Philip Stahl

OHIO COUNTY, W.Va.—

After three years and $6 million dollars, construction on a new lighting system and moving an extra 1,000 feet of earth for an emergency landing is about complete.

“It was a long time. We had to move a lot of dirt to build it up at the end of the runway,” said Airport Manger Tom Tominack.

Tominack said that the FAA made them add an extra 1,000 feet should there ever be an emergency and an aircraft just doesn’t make the runway and needs more space.

“We also added a high intensity lighting system that will enable aircraft to find the runway in inclement weather or in bad fog,” said Tominack.

The FAA will bring in a special aircraft to test the new lights. Once that happens, they will be good to start using.

Tominack also said the airport recently got another grant to patch, paint, and reline some of the runways. Crews will also be working to remodel some of the terminal building inside to bring it back to its original look.

That work should be completed by January.
