Arson investigation under way at steel mill in Mingo Junction

By NEWS9

MINGO JUNCTION, Ohio —

Officials say someone intentionally set fire to the steel mill in Mingo Junction on Sept. 14.

Jefferson County 911 dispatchers confirmed a call came in around 4 p.m. thatFriday for a possible electrical fire. Investigators said they found oxygen cylinders covered with planks of wood and called in the State Fire Marshal.

Mingo Junction Police Chief  Steve Maguschak said there was a stack of things someone set on fire.

Sept. 14 was the last day that RG Steel workers used that facility.

NEWS9 questioned if steel workers were under investigation, but Maguschak said they have no suspects at this time. He said workers had already turned in their keys by that time and it could have been someone who broke into the plant.

In August, a bankruptcy court judge approved the bid and sale of the facility to Frontier Industrial Corp., a demolition and recycling company out of Buffalo, N.Y.

NEWS9 spoke to Craig Slater, vice president of Frontier Industrial Corp., Tuesday. He said none of the damage associated with the fire would affect possible future operations at the Mingo Junction facility.

"We've talked to a lot of exceptionally qualified folks and we're getting encouraged by the interest that's been shown, as well as the quality of the folks we've been talking to about trying to make this work," said Slater. "I still can't say we're going to make that leap, but we're pretty excited about it and we continue to try to make it work."
