Cameron man pleads guilty to animal cruelty charges

By Philip Stahl

MARSHALL COUNTY, W.Va.—

A year after Marshall County Sheriff’s deputies arrested Kevin Strope, 53, of Cameron for animal cruelty, Friday, he pleaded guilty to all 16 counts in circuit court.

Judge Mark Karl sentenced Strope to 20 days in jail for each count, totaling 320 days. However, 305 of those days will be suspended and the rest, he will spend in jail on the weekends. Karl also orders Strope to pay a $600 fine.

At the end of the proceedings, a discussion was brought up on whether or not Strope would be permitted to own cattle, or any other animals again.

After hearing both sides, Karl sided with the prosecution, telling Strope he would not be permitted to own animals for 80 years, but would revisit that decision after he completes his two-year probationary period.
