Carroll County businesses booming

CARROLLTON, Ohio —

What used to be a quiet little town is quiet no longer. Carrollton is now making itself known as people and business rush into town.

"In the last year and a half, we went from 175 members -- and we had been at that number for several years -- to 233 members," said Amy Rutledge, director of the Carroll County Chamber of Commerce.

She said she has been busy more so now than ever this past year with the spike in business.

"It's the shale development. The Utica shale development has started here in Carroll County," Rutledge explained.

Businesses big, small, new and old are moving in, like Deibel Surveying out of Canton.

"We have been here since October. Things are progressing and it's obviously really busy down here. It's hard to walk across the street anymore," Aran Deibel said.

"We have more traffic here in the village because of all the state highways that converge here, but the well development is out in the county and it is in several different areas of the county," said Rutledge.

While many locals are happy about the business boom, only a handful said the truck traffic is just too much.

"There are nights I can't sleep because of the trucks and it's annoying," Carrollton resident Jane Amos said.

Rutledge also mentioned the county's spike is even getting international attention. On Wednesday, a group from Germany was in town to film a documentary on the same topic.
