STEUBENVILLE, Ohio —

When things heat up this summer, residents of Steubenville will have to find a new place to take a dip.

The Belleview swimming pool is the first thing to go after learning of a $1.1 million budget deficit in the city earlier this week.

"It's a nice place. A lot of ladies go there and they enjoy it. It helps them out with their problems, their backs. I think it's wonderful, but it's a shame it's being closed down," Joyce Monigold of Steubenville said.

According to City Manager Cathy Davison, the pool lost the city $62,000 this past year.

"I'm just making an appeal. If you can find the funding for this because it gives so many people joy and we are just really disappointed about it. This city needs something," said pool-goer Mary O'Connor.

The pool is the only facility now to see changes for next year, but many residents are concerned that more cuts are coming, including at the Martin Luther King Jr. Recreation Center, which costs the city more than $200,000 a year to operate.

Those who use the center want to make sure it stays open.

"If they close this down, where are we going to go? We don't have anywhere to go. I think they should figure out their budget, whatever it is, and keep this place open," Bill Ross said.

Many other city facilities and even jobs are up in the air as well.
