Community gathers to remember young woman who died of liver disease

By NEWS9

COLUMBIANA COUNTY, Ohio

Friends, members of Wellsville council and the police chief were among those who paid tribute to Chelsea Lingenfelter, 21, during Tuesday's council meeting.

Members of "Team Chelsea" even helped to name March 23 Organ Donor Awareness Day in the village in honor of the young woman who lost her life to liver disease.

Although Lingenfelter did not win her fight, their fight is just beginning.

"We have a huge following. This is just a piece of them. We're not going to stop. It's going to bring organ donor awareness. We couldn't help Chelsea but maybe we can help someone else," said Lorie Baumgarner.

"I think it's important that we remind people how they can make a difference. One organ donor can save eight lives," said Lou Shepherd.

From green ribbons, to T-shirts and even a tattoo, the impact she has made on the community is clear.

Before ending the night, everyone headed outdoors for a candlelight vigil, holding a moment of silence and prayer in her honor.

"This was the last big step for her. When her mom kissed her goodbye on the forehead in the room and she closed her eyes, she knew when she woke up she was going to be free of all of this. It's not the way we wanted it to work, but in fact she did get what she wanted. Her dream came true," said Shepherd.
