JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ohio —

A whole section of a local road is missing because of a slip, forcing crews to shut the road down.

It's a county road that officials say is essential and it's been shut down for several weeks and not much work has been done.

It's located just past Edison High School on county Road 56. County Bridge Engineer Jeff Oinonen said heavy rains from several years ago are to blame for the gradual slip.

Crews did shut down the road back in the middle of October to begin repairs, but Oinonen said not much work has been done.

He said it's an unusual fix -- not like the other slips he has fixed in the county -- which is making things complicated, but there are other reasons for the delays.

"We've got a little delay right now, of course, with the weather, and we've had delays with the subcontractor getting mobilized to the site. They have started to move equipment in right now," Oinonen said.

Oinonen said work should begin again Friday or Monday.

Overall, he said the project has only been delayed about a week, but he said he wants it to open as quickly as possible since it is an important road.
