Crews safely remove broken cable from Wheeling Suspension Bridge

By Philip Stahl

WHEELING, W.Va. —

Crews with the West Virginia Division of Highways successfully removed an old cable that snapped on the Wheeling Suspension Bridge on March 2.

Bridge Engineer Dave Sada said that crews had a very good day and only a pigtail part of the cable is lodged in the main tower.

Sada said that it will be a few weeks before a new cable will arrive, along with some other parts so crews can install it.

He said the cable is believed to be part of the main bridge, and held up well for the time it did.

He said that several cables were replaces during the 1999 bridge renovation, and an $8 million rehab project for the bridge is slated for 2014.
