Democratic party not endorsing Democratic candidate for commissioner's race

By Adam Del Rosso

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ohio —

It's one of two races for county commissioner -- Democratic incumbent Tom Gentile versus Independent candidate Billy Petrella.

Gentile is nearing the end of his first term and said he is proud of what he and the other commissioners have accomplished.

"We've taken on some great projects. We're actually finishing projects ahead of schedule and even under budget, so that's a really important change for Jefferson County. Also, the county finances are very strong. I think that all speaks for itself," Gentile said.

He said aside from a criticism here and there all three have received overwhelming positive feedback from county residents.

Despite that feedback, Gentile has not received the endorsement from his own party as seen by the county's Democratic Party voter's guide. Committee members have even been seen wearing orange Petrella campaign shirts.

"It doesn't really set us back. It's been discouraging, but it doesn't set us back because our job, even here, has been very bipartisan, all of us working together. We leave our politics out of things in this office. So if the chairman of the party chooses to support an Independent candidate instead of me, I believe that's his prerogative. I don't know how that works. Again, I stay out of politics. I just love doing this job and leaving the politics at the door when I get here," said Gentile.

Committee Chairman John Abdalla said his party hasn't officially endorsed Petrella and had no comment when NEWS9 asked why they haven't endorsed Gentile.

"I have several Democrats and several Republicans who are supporting me in our area; also Independent voters. So I feel that I'm very appreciative to the support I have received from both parties and independent voters alike," Petrella responded.

Despite this being Petrella's first try at office, he said he has the experience and passion to lead the county forward as a public servant.

Gentile said he has enjoyed his time serving and he hopes his record shows he will do the county good for another four years.
