CARROLLTON, Ohio —
A community is mourning after a Carrollton High School student was killed in a crash Thursday afternoon.
Ohio State Highway Patrol troopers said 16-year-old McKayla Hoopes died in the crash just outside of Carrollton at the intersection of state routes 171 and 43 around 3:30 p.m.
Troopers said Hoopes failed to yield at a stop sign and drove through the intersection. Another car then struck the driver's side of Hoopes' car.
Residents throughout mourned after hearing about the death of the teen, who was a junior at Carrollton High School. The school held a moment of silence for Hoopes and students made a memory wall and signs for tonight's football game.
"It just breaks your heart. It's very sad," said Sue Grover, of Carrollton.
Three other people were in Hoopes car at the time of the crash. One of the passengers, a girl, was taken to Akron Children's Hospital for treatment.
Two other passengers in Hoopes' car and the driver of the other car were all treated and released.
Family friends said Hoopes was still recovering from serious injuries from another crash she was in back in June.
This is the fourth fatal crash in the county so far this year.
"I see a lot of drivers crossing the middle line, being distracted," one resident said. "Hopefully others … pay attention to that. Whatever the reason to not be on the phone, watch where you're driving and look both ways. Just the basics."
Troopers said the crash is still under investigation and alcohol is not believed to be a factor.
