Evidence seized in juvenile rape investigation still at BCI

By Natalie Herbick

Cell phones confiscated in connection with a recent rape investigation involving two Steubenville High School athletes are still being processed at the Bureau of Criminal Investigation.

The 16-year-olds remain behind bars at the Jefferson County juvenile detention center on rape and kidnapping charges.

One of the teens is also charged with illegal use of a minor in "nudity oriented" material.

Earlier in the investigation, Steubenville Police Chief Bill McCafferty asked for anyone with any video or pictures of the incident to come forward.

On Tuesday McCafferty said that he received several phone calls, some from people as far away as Cleveland. He said that information is used to further leads.

NEWS9 contacted BCI and a spokesperson confirmed evidence is still in their hands and while they can not give a timeline of how long it will take, they will be able to confirm when they have wrapped up that portion of the investigation.

NEWS9 also contacted the Ohio Attorney General's Office to try to get in touch with the special prosecutors handling the case and got directed to the Communications Office.

A spokesperson said the prosecutors can not comment on open investigations that may lead to serious offenses.

Once a case is closed, the prosecutors have the option of releasing their investigation reports.
