OHIO COUNTY, W.Va. —

Police in Florida are confirming that Vernon Dunnom had an alibi the night a man was murdered in Miami Gardens, Fla.

NEWS9 spoke with Capt. Ralph Suarez with the Miami Gardens Police Department, the city where police initially said Dunnom had possibly committed murder.

"The witness positively (identified) him as being there and committing the crime. Subsequently, we went ahead with the arrest," Suarez said.

But those who know Dunnom knew that couldn't be true. University officials created a detailed timeline proving to police that they had the wrong guy.

"If we have a witness that says, 'Yes. That is the person that did it. I'm letting you know that's the person that did it,' we have to go with that," said Suarez

After his alibi checked out, Dunnom walked out of the Northern Regional Jail Monday night with his attorney by his side.

Suarez said Dunnom's case is rare. He said they typically do not see charges dropped so easily after an arrest.

"In every case, especially a homicide, you gather your evidence and you gather as much evidence you can to make an arrest. You never want to make an arrest then later on something additional shows up," he said.

NEWS9 also spoke with officials in state attorney's office and they said they always do their best to get the right guy and take serious responsibility in undoing any wrongs.
