FOLLANSBEE, W.Va. —
Running water is often taken for granted, but for one street in Follansbee, they appreciate whatever water pressure they can get.
Resident Laura Beckelhimer said, "It takes me 25 to 30 minutes to fill the washer to do a load of clothes, so three loads of laundry takes all day."
Not only laundry, but doing dishes is also made difficult because of low water-pressure to homes on Morton Road. With the water tower in the distance and the hills in-between, getting enough water to the homes has been difficult.
To fix that, the city will be installing two boosters using money given by Gov. Joe Manchin while he was still in office.
Follansbee City Manager John DeStefano said, "One of (Manchin's) last gifts to the city of Follansbee when he left office was, 'I'm going to give you guys $190,000 from the Governor's Community Partnership Program,' and we had to match it with 10 percent."
At times, residents don't have any water at all -- an issue that will soon be no longer.
DeStefano said, "Some of the people, their homes actually sit about another house or below another house on the same line. If someone is using a lot of water that day, the other person really has very limited pressure."
One booster will focus on the homes while the other will benefit fire crews -- something DeStafano says is a moral but not a legal obligation.
"Fire protection really hasn't been a major problem, but this will defiantly make it easier on all the firemen, too," said DeStefano.
During Thursday's preconstruction meeting, officials estimated that the work won't begin for another six to eight weeks because they have to wait for the pumps. Once they start, DeStefano hopes the work will be done in one month.
