HANCOCK COUNTY, W.Va. —

The Hancock County School board acceptedSuperintendent Sue Smith's recommendation to conduct a second auction of the Memorial Stadium in Newell.

The auction will be held at 10 a.m. Nov. 30 at the board office.

The school board voted Tuesday night 4-1 in favor of the auction.

Smith said the board did not receive the minimum $250,000 bid during the first auction a few weeks ago and said that minimum will stay the same for this second auction.

"The mayor in the city of Chester brought me a contract on Tuesday that was from the City Council, wanting to purchase the property for $250,000," said Smith.

She said the city wants to use the space for the Chester fire department.

According to Smith, another citizen who stopped by Tuesday's council meeting indicated that he wanted an opportunity to bid and indicated he would keep the field with the exception of the small area behind the scoreboard for the community.

Everyone on the school board, except John Manypenny, supported the second auction.

Manypenny left the meeting before News9 could get a comment.

"It is emotional for some people and they do have strong feelings about this. This has been in place since probably the early '50's and it's a landmark," said Smith.

Smith reiterated, the is not permitted to offer up stipulations on what the new owner can do with the site.

If the school board does not receive a minimum bid, Smith said they do not have to sell the property.

Instead, she said they can keep it until the market is better or look into other options.
