Highway patrol cracking down on speeding in work zones

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ohio —

While drivers may be in a rush to get to work or back home after a long day, police said it's worth it to slow down when passing through a construction zone.

"Those zones are very dangerous if you don't keep your eyes open. Pay attention to what's going on. We are cracking down," said Ohio State Highway Patrol Sgt. Robert Bodo.

With several projects going on in the Valley, many roads are down to one lane, including state Route 7. With workers on the road, Bodo said, he and other troopers are paying close attention for everyone's safety.

"If workers are present, we are watching out for them. Also, just the speed itself. If an accident happens in a work zone, it just leads to a bigger problem," Bodo said.

Bodo said they see more speeding than one might expect.

"Daily. We have troopers working the construction zones, so there are always troopers in those zones, and we are working them pretty hard."

If a driver happens to get caught going over the speed limit, especially in a work zone, that driver could be paying more.

"The court has the option to double the fines if they wish to do so. Just watch for the speed limit signs. Signs are posted. Reduce speeds," Bodo suggested.

Bodo added that drivers leaving enough following distance between can also help alleviate problems.
