Man charged with sexually assaulting woman near Wheeling school

OHIO COUNTY, W.Va. —

Wheeling police have arrested a man who they said sexually assaulted a woman near a school.

Joseph Earl Jones, 31, is charged with two counts of sexual assault.

Police said they believe Jones was involved in the assault of a woman near Warwood Middle School in August 2012.

Wheeling Deputy Police Chief Martin Kimball said it took five months for an arrest to be made because of DNA tests.

“It takes a very long time to get those results back, and when we did, they matched what we found on our victim and issued an arrest warrant for Jones,” said Kimball.

After months of investigating and with the help of forensic evidence, police arrested Jones in Allegheny County, Pa., on Dec. 21.

Jones was extradited to Wheeling Thursday.

Kimball said that more charges are possible, but that decision is up to the prosecutor’s office.

Jones remained in the West Virginia Northern Regional Jail on $200,000 bond.
