Meningitis numbers up across nation, Ohio

By Adam Del Rosso

BELMONT COUNTY, Ohio —

The meningitis outbreak is now several weeks old and spans 15 states, including Ohio. While no cases have been reported locally, one office in Saint Clairsville has a connection to the outbreak.

Khoury Surgical Group on National Road is included in the Ohio Department of Health’s list of 64 facilities receiving medications from New England Compounding Center, where the contamination happened.

"The (Food and Drug Administration) has asked physicians who received the additional recalled medications from the New England Compounding Center, out of an abundance of caution, contact those patients and check on their health status," said Dr. Mary DiOrio, state epidemiologist with the Ohio Department of Health.

NEWS9 spoke with Dr. Rajai Khoury, who assured us that the medication they received is not the cause of the meningitis. He said his office is notifying the patients who received the injection to be overly cautious. He said there is no need to worry.

Some residents we spoke with today, even though they have not received any injections recently, said they are still concerned.

"Yes, definitely. Maybe friends of mine have had the injections. You never know what could happen," said Emeline Manning.

NEWS9 also spoke with the Belmont County Health Department, and officials said they are monitoring the situation as well.

"I think individuals who have any health questions should contact their health care provider and ask them what they need to be doing," DiOrio said.

Khoury said patient safety is his No. 1 concern, and he will continue to address any issues that his patients may have as they come in.
