Money awarded to demolish abandoned buildings

By Adam Del Rosso

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ohio —

It's a problem many cities across the state are facing -- the number of old, abandoned buildings are growing as fast as the weeds and grass around them.

In February, Ohio Attorney General Mike Dewine said he would award $75 million to knock them down. So how much will Jefferson County see?

"Each of the counties had to submit an application. We were successful here in Jefferson County to be awarded $277,274 for the elimination of slum and blight," Regional Planning Commission Director Dom Mucci said.

He added that 33 different entities worked together to come up with a list of 28 buildings.

Those 28 proposed buildings are divided evenly across the county, with five in Steubenville, five in Toronto, seven in the various villages (Yorkville, Dillonvale, Mingo Junction, Tiltonsville, Wintersville, Adena, and Smithfield) and 11 across the townships (Smithfield, Knox, Mt. Pleasant, Island Creek, Wayne, Salem, Steubenville, Wells, Cross Creek, Warren, and Saline).

While he is happy with the funding, Mucci said more can be done.

"I could probably provide the county with a list of over 200 or 300 homes that need to be removed," he said.

And even though a list has been made, the demolitions won't begin immediately.

"There is a process. You have to send out nuisance complaints, you have to do a title search and lead abatement assessments," Mucci said.

Mucci said once all of that paperwork is done, the demolition will begin. He expects that won't happen until the beginning of 2013.
