Nails fill local road

By Adam Del Rosso

BROOKE COUNTY, W.Va. —

Drivers on a Brooke County road got an unpleasant surprise.

Officials say hundreds of nails fell on parts of Coss Road.

NEWS9 showed up as crews were cleaning it all up, passing several unhappy drivers on the way.

Down the road lies a drilling pad owned by Chesapeake Energy. Officials from Chesapeake told NEWS9 they came across the nails and sent crews to clean them up. Those crews said it took them hours to cover the mile or so of road, picking up hundreds of nails with magnets.

It's unclear how many flat tires were caused a result, but residents say they are not happy.

As for how and when the nails got there, that too is still unclear.

It was first believed they may have been placed there intentionally by residents to deter the drilling trucks, but neighbors tell me they do not think that is the case. They believe the nails could have fallen off a passing truck.

Chesapeake said they were not responsible.
