Neighbors: Fire remains still causing problems

By Adam Del Rosso

EAST LIVERPOOL, Ohio —

Neighbors along one road in Columbiana County are fed up with what's left of an old house that caught fire years ago.

Kurt Jordan and Diana Huntting are neighbors on Trentvale Street in East Liverpool, each sitting on opposite sides of a house that caught fire in January 2010.

Today, the remains still sit there and Jordan and Huntting want them gone.

"We've had to collapse it in because we have little kids and stuff. We pushed it all in, but you can see it is still a mess," Jordan said.

Not only is Jordan afraid of bricks falling and hurting someone, he said it's causing damage to his own home, especially when it rains.

"We smell it every day that it rains. You smell fire. Also when it rains, we have a drain here and all the water from the house and the debris washes out, down into my drain and then the water runs into my basement," Jordan explained.

"I'm having breathing issues, and the weeds and the rats. Every time it rains, it's horrible," added Huntting.

Jordan and Huntting said they both have gone to the city to complain but over the past two years, nothing has changed.

"I just want something done. It's been too long. They push the blame to the fire department and the fire department pushes it back. I just want something done," Huntting said.

Fire Chief Bill Jones, who was not chief when the fire happened, tells NEWS9 he is trying to figure out a solution.

NEWS9 also tried to speak with Bill Cowan, the head of the planning department, but he was not available for comment.

Other officials told NEWS9 finding the money is tough since the owner, who has since passed away, did not have home insurance.
