ODOT workers rescue man after crash

By Alex Koscevic

MONROE COUNTY, Ohio —

Kurt Hooper and Darin Burkhart, two Ohio Department of Transportation workers, may be responsible for saving a man's life after they found him off Route 7 Wednesday morning.

The two men were preparing to mow along the road when they saw that a portion of the guardrail had been damaged. However, they didn't see any other evidence of a crash until they began mowing down the hillside.

"Darren, who was running the mower, he got out, and I seen him throwing his arms out," Hooper said. "I drove up to where he was at, and then he pointed the vehicle out. We didn't know then that there was even anybody in it."

The vehicle was down the hill, about 30 feet from the guardrail, Hooper said.

"I walked down to the vehicle there, and the guy was leaned over toward the passenger side of it," he said. "It was terrible. I ain't never seen so much blood in my life. It was bad."

The man told the two workers he had been there overnight, Hooper said.

That man was transported by medical helicopter to a Morgantown hospital.
